One expert thinks Clyde Gates wasn’t at fault on deep pass

In the second quarter of the Jets loss to New England last Thursday, Clyde Gates couldn’t come down with a pass down the deep middle from Geno Smith.

Many have ripped Gates for not making the grab, but not the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, who called the game along with Brad Nessler.

“The ball was late and underthrown,” Mayock said. “If the ball came out sooner or was deeper, it’s a touchdown because the safety can’t get over the top.”
