New Jersey – A couple of injury situations to look at along with what is going on up north. Let’s get into it . . .
It looked like Erin Henderson suffered a serious foot injury against the Buffalo Bills.
I’m not doctor, but looking at Henderson walking today in the locker room, he didn’t look like a guy who is going to be out long.
He was walking with no limp and in flip-flops. And he had no wrap or anything on his bad foot.
It didn’t look that bad to me . . .
The injury that has to concern the Jets the most is the calf injury to James Carpenter. These calf injuries linger.
Think about rookie linebacker Jarvis Jenkins. He hurt his calf in August and we still haven’t see him yet.
I remember that calf injury Thomas Jones had one summer at Hofstra, and he was out a good three weeks.
I’m not saying every injury is the same, but calves can be tricky. If you rush back to fast you make it worse.
We will give you more information on Carpenter as the week progresses.
If Carpenter can’t play, Dakota Dozier would likely get the start.
Yes, when Carpenter got hurt last week, it was Wesley Johnson who filled in.
And there is a slight chance that the Jets go with Johnson again if Carpenter can’t go.
But the reason Johnson filled in for Carpenter is simple. Dozier wasn’t active.
You see Johnson is a better backup center than Dozier, so the Jets dress him as the backup swing player in case there is an injury to the center or either guard.
But if there is an injury to a guard entering a game, and you know the player isn’t going to play, Dozier is the backup guard who likely gets the start.
Johnson is a good player, but he’s a little on the lean side. Dozier has more “mass in the ass” as scouts like to say, so he gets more push in the running game.
So if Carpenter doesn’t play, Dozier would likely get the start . . .
Buffalo is a mess.
Let me ask a question – Can you imagine if Woody Johnson met with offensive players around Todd Bowles back?
Can you imagine the firestorm that would create? Bowles, a man of tremendous pride, might want out if the owner pulled that.
Woody wouldn’t do that.
Terry and Kim Pegula pulled that in Buffalo, meeting with offensive players before offensive coordinator Greg Roman was fired.
Play in a game of fill-in-the-blank, and plug that situation into any team in the league. The Rooney’s meeting with offensive players around Mike Tomlin’s back. Or Bob Kraft in New England doing that to Belichick.
What a ridiculous thing to do.
What the Pegula’s did was bad form.
But Rex goes along with it because he desperately wants to keep this job, and he probably knows if he gets fired in Buffalo, he will never be an NFL head coach again.
Buffalo is a mess.
Sometimes owners think they are being good owners by being very hands-on. However, football is very complex, and few owner understand all the nuances, so it’s best to hire good football people, and stay in your lane.
