A lot of owners never speak to the media.
Or only on major occasions – like press conferences introducing a new coach or stadium project.
When was the last time you heard from Buffalo’s Terry Pegula, Miami’s Stephen Ross or the L.A. Ram’s Stan Kroenke.
At the NFL Owner’s Meeting early this week in Palm Beach, Jets owner Woody Johnson said, “I think Justin Fields is going to be a total winner for us. He’s going to be the starter, as you found out. I’ve been impressed with him since his college days. It was him or Trevor Lawrence.”
People jumped on him for this because in the 2021 draft, the Jets had the second pick, and Trevor Lawrence was taken #1 by Jacksonville. The Jets then selected Zach Wilson at two. It did not come down to Fields or Lawrence for the Jets. Lawrence wasn’t an option.
It was an honest mistake, but people crushed the Jets’ owner for this quote, just like they have tried to make him look bad for innocent things he’s said in the past.
Why subject yourself to these ad hominem attacks?
Maybe take a pass like Pegula, Kroenke, Ross, and many owners in all sports. There is no rule saying you have to talk.
Let Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey do the press stuff. That is why you pay them the big bucks.
Why subject yourself to all these attacks every time you address the media?
Why do you need that? Why does your family need that?
Just kick back and enjoy your team with your family.
