Florham Park – A lot of interesting stuff going on around Jets camp, so let’s not waste any more time, and get into it . . .
Aaron Maybin made some news the last few days regarding his comments about knocking Reggie Bush out of the game.
Mike Pouncey responded that Maybin is “a joke.”
Why is Maybin quoted so much for a situational player?
That is simple. On a team where a lot of guys don’t like to talk to the press, he’s always available, accommodating and quotable.
But at some point, reporters need to make a decision, and say to themselves, “I have to stop quoting this guy so much until he makes more plays.”
Maybin’s a terrific guy, but he hasn’t been making a lot of players.
And when you don’t make plays, your quotes don’t have a lot of juice.
On some level, I don’t totally blame Maybin for being quoted too much. Aside from him being a player who doesn’t hide in the trainer’s room during the media session, he also is constantly asked by the PR department and multi-media department to do interviews. He’s a go-to guy in the organization . . .
Speaking of pass rushers, Miami’s Cam Wake is having another good year for the Dolphins. He has 6.5 sacks.
One Jets player told me what makes Wake so tough to deal with is he’s equally as good at speed rushing as power rushing, and mixes up the two strategies very well. Very few guys are are good at Wake at both. Wake is a 260-pound powerhouse who also runs 4.65, so he can run over you, or run by you . . .
With all the talk about cheap shots this week, let’s not forget Dolphins guard Richie Incognito, who is considered one of the dirtiest players in the league.
“A dirty player being let to play dirty … Richie Incognito,” said Houston Texans DT Antonio Smith. “He was hitting people after the play, grabbing your ankle and trying to twist to break your ankle and he was doing it right in front of the referees and he was still in the game. It’s the referees’ job to stop him from doing it because everything that I would do to stop him I would get a penalty for. There were so many times that I would have to loved to just be like hockey. Drop the helmets off, drop the gloves, go fisticuffs. We’re men. Let’s go at it.”
Incognito responded on twitter – “I will never apologize for the way I play football. Physical- Hard Nose football from snap to whistle. Get with it or get run over by it.”
I asked Jets nose tackle Daniel Muir how he’s going to deal with Incognito’s style – “You have to keep your head on a swivel. (He’s) knocking guys over the pile, diving at knees.”
Muir says his first NFL start was against Incognito when he started for the Rams, and Muir finished with seven tackles and a sack. Muir was playing for the Indianapolis Colts at the time . . .
Expect a big game for Dustin Keller against the Dolphins linebackers. Koa Misi, Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett are all talented, but they are big linebackers who can be exploited in the passing game.
I didn’t realize this this other day, but Keller was targeted seven times against New England, and caught all seven passes. That is awfully impressive.
And a lot of that work was against New England’s linebackers . . .
Speaking of tight ends, this Jeff Cumberland situation amazes me. The guy dislocated his hand from his wrist against New England on Sunday, and there is a good chance he’s going to play on Sunday.
Are you kidding me?
The doctors on the sideline, in Foxboro, actually popped it back into place.
Cumberland said he was able to do everything in practice (even though he was listed as limited). Cumberland thinks he’s going top play with a brace on his wrist . . .
