Cortland – Time for a heaping helping of practice notes, and a thought on Boomer saying the Jets should cut Tebow. Let’s get it started . . .
So far, so good.
As far as this whole Sanchez-Tebow soap opera, the maturity Sanchez has displayed with the media has been awfully impressive.
“I like the way he’s handling this,” said one long-time Jets beat reporter.
I can’t say enough good things about the class he’s displayed so far.
If Sanchez keeps this up, I think this can work.
I think one thing that really helped is what a phenomenal person Tebow is. It’s hard to dislike the guy, even if he’s threatening your playing time . . .
DeMario Davis had a nice PD on a quick out to Jeff Cumberland.
Davis was also beat by Cumberland on an earlier play, but honestly, the coverage wasn’t bad. Tebow threw a gorgeous deep out to the tight end. He led him perfect – put it the only place it could be successful . . .
Vlad Ducasse missed a block on a blitzing Josh Mauga. He has got to improve his blitz recognition . . .
One of the better passes of the morning practice was Sanchez to Eron Riley over the middle.
I have to admit, I think it’s ridiculous that people keep saying the Jets need to bring in more receivers.
Holmes and Kerley will be back in a few days. So you have Holmes, Kerley, Patrick Turner, Stephen Hill and Chaz Schilens.
I personally think Riley is also worthy of a roster spot.
You have six right there, so why are the answer always outside the building to some people?
And let’s not forget, the Jets are going to throw a lot to the tight ends (Keller, who had a very good practice today), Jeff Cumberland and Josh Baker (who is kind of TE-FB).
The Jets don’t need anybody. It’s time for them to ignore the white noise, and have faith in who they have . . .
Quinton Coples had a couple of sacks . . .
Yeremiah Bell’s run defense instincts are top-shelf.
On one of the first plays of the 11-on-11 part of practice, he shot into a gap and stopped Shonn Greene for no gain . . .
Jim Leonhard signed with the Denver Broncos over the weekend.
I think the Jets can overcome his loss at safety. They have a pretty good group back there now with Bell, Eric Smith, LaRon Landry and Antonio Allen (who I think is ahead of Josh Bush right now).
But I think they might miss him as a punt returner.
The guys in the mix right now for the job on Kyle Wilson, Dexter Jackson and maybe Jordan White (though I think he will wind up on the practice squad).
I see some shaky catching going on back there right now. Rex used to always joke that Leonhard could “catch a punt in a hurricane.”
I’m not seeing that level of sure-handedness right now.
I can’t comment on Jeremy Kerley right now because he’s not practicing . . .
I haven’t mentioned CB Julian Posey yet in one of these notebooks.
Today, he had a nice strip of Chaz Schilens after a reception . . .
What Boomer Esiason said this morning was misguided.
“I’m just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and I’ll tell you why I would,” Esiason said on WFAN. “It’s not in any way, shape or form — I think — benefiting this team.”
At first, I thought maybe Carton said it.
It’s a bizarre statement.
First of all, Boomer should know better than base his opinion on newspaper accounts of the “scrimmage.”
The papers claimed Tebow was 1-4 in the “scrimmage.” You know how I feel about training camp practice stats – they are IDIOTIC! This is a time for teaching, learning, getting the kinks out, not stats.
And let’s be honest, Saturday’s “scrimmage” was basically a gloried practice.
Tebow threw one of the prettiest passes of the evening, a beauty down the left sideline to Jackson that just went over his fingertips. It was an outstanding throw.
And how can you truly access Tebow’s performance on Saturday as a scrambler, when there is no tackling allowed on the quarterbacks? In a real game situation, the 255-pounder probably would have run over some of them.
Tebow is here to supplant Sanchez, now and then, as a wildcat quarterback. This isn’t a quarterback competition.
So why would they consider cutting him now?
That makes no sense . . .
As for the fight between Joe McKnight and D’Anton Lynn, I will leave that to others to blow out of proportion. It was just another practice fight – no big deal.
