New Jersey – It’s time for a heaping helping of Dan’s Views from the Jets-Arizona game. Let’s get it started . . .
The Jets special team’s continue to struggle.
Nick Folk missed two field goals, the Jets gave up a faked punt for a long gain, and Kyle Wilson was called for an illegal block in the back on a punt return.
It a shame that one of the greatest special team’s coaches in NFL history has to go out this way. He is retiring after the season . . .
For those inclined to cut Mark Sanchez some slack on his first pick of the Arizona game, LB Paris Lenon was bearing down on him as he threw . . .
Early in the second quarter, Dustin Keller was beat by OLB Sam Acho to sack Mark Sanchez on third-and-two and end the drive.
While Keller didn’t do a great job of blocking, I also have another issue with this play . . .
The Jets faked a handoff on this play. To me, this was a waste of a split second. Who is biting on play-action in this situation? Acho certainly didn’t.
I know some teams run on third-and-two, but it’s rare . . .
The Jets ran the ball very well against Arizona, rushing 43 times for 177 yards.
Aside from the offensive line playing well, kudos should go to Jeff Cumberland for his blocking against the Cardinals. He was really getting after it.
Right before the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter, Cumberland manhandled a linebacker, and Shonn Greene ran behind him for a gain of seven.
In the middle of the second quarter, Cumberland had a nice block on LB Paris Lenon on a Greene run to the left side for a gain of five.
Cumberland is becoming a complete tight end. He also had a touchdown catch in his game from Greg McElroy, and torched safety Adrian Wilson, on a deep out, for a gain of 24 on a pass from Sanchez . . .
One of the biggest plays of the Jets win over Arizona, was a 13-yard completion from McElroy to Jeremy Kerley, on third-and-nine, with a little over three minutes left.
This play is a perfect example of why there really isn’t a drop-off from Santonio Holmes to Kerley. One of the NFL’s best cornerbacks, Patrick Peterson, was covering Kerley, and had pretty good coverage. McElroy threw it into a spot where only Kerley could get it, and the TCU-product made a one-handed catch. This was a huge play because if it wasn’t successful, the Jets would have had to attempt a 50-plus yard field goal, or punt. But it kept the drive going, and helped the Jets eventually run the block out.
This was a great throw and a great catch on a great cornerback . . .
Lex Hilliard has been kind of quiet in recent games, but he had a terrific game as a lead blocker against Arizona.
On two long runs on the Jets scoring drive that went from the late third to early fourth quarter, he had key blocks on both long runs by Bilal Powell.
On a 17-yard gain off right tackle. Hilliard got to the second level and locked up Lenon. Then he also led the way on a gain of 10, to the right side, late in the drive . . .
I’m not going to write about the quarterback situation today. I covered it the last two days, and I’m not going to guess. We will find out tomorrow, or whenever it’s leaked to Manish, Rich, Jay Glazer or whoever. I’m just not into chasing windmills, or kissing the butts of agents.
When you kiss the butts of agents, in exchange, you have to right flowery pieces about their clients, and that isn’t how I roll . . .
