Hebron, Kentucky – Dan checks in from the Bluegrass State with some notes the day after the Jets’ debacle in Cincinnati . . .
Ben Kotwica has dealt with bigger problems than this as an Apache Helicopter pilot in Iraq– so he surely should be able to deal with the serious wedge issue he’s having with his kickoff return unit.
The Jets wedge play against Cincinnati was poor.
And has been a problem all year.
It might be time to replace Tommy Bohanon as a member of the wedge – unless he starts blocking better. He’s too tentative. You would think he’d be great as part of the blocking wedge on kickoff return at 6-0, 252 and built like a block of granite, but if he’s not making good decisions on who to pick up, it doesn’t matter how he’s built.
On the opening kickoff, Bohanon missed a block on Far Rockaway’s Vincent Rey, who made the stop on the Jets’ first kickoff return of the game on the 16 yard-line.
This wedge issue needs to be fixed, and it needs to be fixed now. It’s really hurting the Jets’ field position, which is a huge problem when you have a rookie quarterback. You want to shorten the field for Geno Smith, not make him go 85 yards . . .
Dee Milliner was pulled from the starting lineup for the second time this year, in Cincinnati.
But you know what, he shouldn’t have to be replaced in the starting lineup, because he shouldn’t be starting.
Darrin Walls should start until Milliner’s ready.
And Milliner’s performance could have turned out even worse than it was, if Mo Sanu had caught that pass down the deep middle from Andy Dalton. Jets dodged a bullet.
Jets need to stop the ego nonsense with Milliner. Start him when he’s ready, not because he was the ninth pick overall and the team trading Darrelle Revis. Forget PR – make the right football decision . . .
What a pickup this David Nelson has been for the Jets!
He finished the Bengals’ game with eight catches for 80 yards.
And he’s such a tenacious blocker, he and Adam Jones had a little tiff.
Now Nelson got a penalty on this play, but he does this on every player – really gets after it as a blocker, frustrating cornerbacks.
And is a big help to the Jets’ running game.
This was a heck of an in-season pickup for the Jets . . .
Marvin Jones set a Bengals record for touchdowns in a game with four.
With all the attention being paid to A.J. Green, he got a lot of one-on-one coverage and took advantage of it.
What a great fifth round value in the draft. He was picked in the fifth round last year out of Cal-Berkeley . . .
The Jets do have a former New Orleans Saints player on their roster, Salim Hakim, who should provide some good insights into the Saints for them . . .
Keep eye on the injury issue in the Saints’ secondary. They were down to five defensive backs, total, at the end of their game with the Buffalo Bills . . .
Why am I in Kentucky? For the uninitiated, the Cincinnati airport is in Kentucky. I know that sounds strange, but “Cinci” borders Kentucky, and a lot of it’s suburbs are actually in Kentucky . . .
