New Jersey – In the latest edition of “Behind the Jets,” we have items on Kevin Kolb, Ryan Nassib and Jarvis Jones . . .
Kevin Kolb to the Jets was never going to happen.
It was a media-created story.
Some people assumed that since Kolb played under offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg in Philadelphia, the free agent quarterback was a natural fit for the Jets.
The Jets weren’t interested.
And now some are making the Jets look bad on this one, like they missed out on another player.
But anybody criticizing them for not landing him – is barking up the wrong tree.
How can you rip a team for missing out on a player they weren’t interested in?
At least one reporter sees this for what it is.
“I read some stories this morning about how the Jets will see Kevin Kolb this year, just not in their locker room as SOME thought they would, that SOME think the Jets were interested in bringing Kolb to their team. Maybe somebody started an unfounded rumor that the Jets had interest in Kolb when they really didn’t, and now he’s going to the Bills. Reading between the lines: The Jets screwed up again,” the writer said.
“Then it might be that the Jets didn’t screw up, that they did well in shielding their true intentions regarding Kolb from the all-knowing reporters. That maybe SOME were completely wrong and talking out of their butts when they insisted a week ago that the Jets were really interested in Kolb.
“But let’s take another look at this topic as a responsible journalist would. The Jets had a while now to try to sign Kolb as SOME thought they were going to. That never happened. Maybe the Jets really had no interest in Kolb.”
They didn’t.
I also read a report that Jets missed out on Jason Campbell who signed with Cleveland.
Again, how do you miss out on a guy you aren’t interested in?
What seems to happen a lot now is that one writer speculates on something, and then other writers, website editors or sports networks turn that speculation into the gospel.
I have two sources on this – the Jets weren’t interested in Kolb.
Right now, they are standing pat at quarterback with the intent of having a quarterback competition.
Now, that won’t preclude them from picking a quarterback, perhaps in Rounds Two-Four.
Maybe a guy like Ryan Nassib of Syracuse, who Nolan Nawrocki had this to say about, “Has Pro Bowl potential with continued refinement. The game slowed down for him as a senior, he showed an improved command of the offense, and he enters the NFL as one of the most pro ready passers in this class. Football is his life. He’s driven to succeed.” . . .
Many people have connected Georgia OLB Jarvis Jones to the Jets at nine.
But honestly, it’s going to be hard for them to pull the trigger on him after he ran a 4.9 forty at his Pro Bowl.
Also throw in his Spinal Stenosis, and it’s hard to see the Jets making this pick.
But while people are ripping him for his speed, maybe it’s a little overrated in his case. The guy had 28 sacks over his last two years in college, in the best conference in the country, the SEC.
It’s hard to ignore that.
