Florham Park – A couple of things to get into today including Burner-gate . . .
Jets guard Alex Lewis wasn’t on the practice field today. He suffered a serious ankle injury against Pittsburgh and is probably a long shot to play on Sunday.
But you know what’s pretty amazing? Unless I’m mistaken, he finished the game with the injury.
Saw him in the locker room after the game and he could hardly walk.
It would make sense for the Jets to re-sign this player.
He is a very solid guard and tough as nails. He will play hurt and really gets after defenders on the field. He plays with an attitude.
These are the kind of guys you want on your team. Guys who love football and will play banged up as far as they can push it. Some might make the argument he’s the polar opposite of the guy he replaced . . .
Manish Mehta had another blockbuster story.
According to Mehta, Adam Gase has responded to criticisms by telling people: “I’m rich as f–k. In fact, some people on One Jets Drive are convinced Gase or a family member has a burner Twitter account to monitor what is being written or said about him—and defend him if necessary.”
Some people have surmised that burner account is @WyattV18 who is constantly defending Gase on twitter.
A fan tweeted, “[Gase] needs to be let go from the NFL permanently.”
WyattV18 responded, “Record setting offenses in Denver and made the playoffs in Miami. Where have they been since?”
There are myriad tweets from WyattV18 defending Gase. WyattV18 even got on the Jets’ training staff for being behind the times dealing with soft tissue injuries.
What is my take on this?
Well first of all, as we reported here a couple of times, a league source told us Gase had a burner account in Miami.
Honestly, I don’t have a huge problem with burner accounts on one level. If it’s a friend or family member defending somebody who is under constant assault, countering with positive facts, that is fine. Twitter is a cesspool with a lot of gutter snipers who take vicious shots at public figures. So if a friend or family member of that person wants to defend them, under some anonymous name, it’s not the end of the world.
The issue I would have with the WyattV18 account, if it is indeed a Gase burner account, is the person taking a shot at the Jets’ training staff, and that is why this account needs to be investigated by the Jets’ security staff to find out who this is.
That is going too far on a burner account, if this is indeed a burner account.
Once again, if a burner account wants to point out that Gase had “record-setting offenses in Denver and made the playoffs in Miami,” that is fine. Harmless enough.
However, if WyattV18 is in deed a burner account, and this account called out Jets trainer John Mellody (pictured above), and his staff, about how they deal with soft-tissue injuries, that is probably going too far.
WyattV18 tweeted, “The training staff is behind the rest of the league when it comes to innovative treatments for soft tissue injuries.”
I’m no special-pleader for Mellody, but to blame him for soft tissue injuries, for goodness sake, every team has a bunch of them. And in the case of Demaryius Thomas, as I pointed out yesterday, the Jets acquired him with a hamstring injury, so how can you blame a trainer for that, when you acquired damaged goods? If anyone is the blame for the Jets trading for this injured player, it is Gase, who wanted Thomas. They worked together in Denver. Thomas is one of the more high-profile Jets soft-tissue injuries, along with linebacker C.J. Mosley (groin).
If Gase is somehow involved with throwing the training staff under the bus for their treatment of soft tissue injuries, via a burner account, this is a very serious matter.
That is why the Jets’ security staff needs to open an investigation.
Gase might be 100 percent innocent here.
Let’s find out.
