Tedy Bruschi is wrong for what he said about Tim Tebow. He clearly has no understanding of what is going on in Florham Park.
Bruschi, now working for ESPN, said Tebow should stop talking to the media so much.
“Stop talking to the media so much,” Bruschi said. “You need to disappear, okay, Tim Tebow? You’re not the starting quarterback, it’s Mark Sanchez’s team. I want my voice to come from my head coach and my quarterback — my starting quarterback. That message has to be consistent.
“I don’t want all this competition brewing, and every time you speak and anytime you talk about competition or anything like that, you’re twisting things. I want one voice. One quarterback, not two.”
Let me ask you a question Tedy – Do you think Tebow wants to speak to the media? Do you think he enjoys sitting there, getting sprayed with questions about Mark Sanchez and his role, and having to do more tap-dancing than Sammy Davis? It’s tedious.
Of course not, just like he wanted nothing to do with that major press conference after the trade. He was asked to do it by Jets management. That presser wasn’t his choice, and he made that clear on more than one occasion.
There has been such a tremendous media demand for him throughout the off-season, so the Jets make him available. And by the way, it’s not every week, it’s every other week.
Of course it’s not ideal for the backup quarterback to talk so much, but how often is the #2 quarterback the most popular athlete in the country?
And also, he’s not a conventional backup quarterback. He’s going to play, in a wildcard role, likely in every game. He’s also going to have a role on special teams. How many #2 QB’s have those kind of roles every week? That is very, very rare.
Some of these former New England Patriots in the media have a strange mindset for their new jobs. They still think like Bill Belichick, when it comes to player interviews. Belichick coaches his players on what to say and not to say. Also, availability is very limited, by design. Players get in trouble for straying from this blueprint. There isn’t a lot of freedom of speech in Foxboro.
So when Wes Welker was somewhat critical of Patriots’ management a few months ago over his contract dispute, Willie McGinest, now with the NFL Network, ripped him for that.
And now Bruschi rips Tebow.
Memo to Tedy and Willie – stop thinking like you are still in Belichick’s North Korea! You are in the media now, and you should stop ripping players for not doing it “The Patriots Way.” It’s a ridiculous mindset to have as an analyst – Belichick has the strictest media rules in the league – most teams don’t do it that way, so don’t judge players by the Patriots’ media guidelines.
For Bruschi to rip the salt-of-the-earth Tebow (I’m not a Tebow sycophant, but as a person, the guy is pretty impressive, there is no way around that.), is wrong.
He’s acting like the guy is trying to bring attention to himself, and that could not be farther from the truth.
He’s just being cooperative. A lot of reporters want to interview him, and every couple of weeks, he obliges. For that, he should not be criticized.
