New Jersey – Mr. Coffee had a very busy couple of days. Here is Part II of our look at some of the personnel moves made the last couple of days by the Jets’ GM.
RELEASED
Doug Middleton (S/6-0/210/Appalachian State/Winston-Salem, NC)
On the practice squad. Big-time hitter who is extremely bright and has good instincts. Should have been drafted.
Darryl Morris (CB/5-10/188/Texas State/San Antonio,TX)
He had a pretty good summer, but had no chance to beatING out fourth-round pick Juston Burris. That isn’t how it works around here. He had to be perfect, and Burris didn’t.
Claude Pelon (DL/6-4/300/Southern California/Orlando, FL)
Signed to the practice squad. From a size/speed/athleticism standpoint, this guy is a second-round pick. He went undrafted because he was a college vagabond. Signed with Florida State out of high school, but didn’t qualify academically, then went to a couple of junior colleges, and ended up at USC, where he got hurt as a senior.
This guy has a really quick feet for a 300-pounder, and with a year of Pepper Johnson developing him, the Jets could have something down the road.
Kevin Short (CB/6-2/185/Fort Scott CC (KS)/Florissant, MO)
He looked good in the spring, but didn’t carry that momentum into training camp.
Kenbrell Thompkins (WR/6-0/195/Cincinnati/Miami, FL)
Once the three youngsters (Robby Anderson, Jalin Marshall and Charone Peake) emerged in camp, he had almost no chance of making it. Anderson seems ready for the #4 job. That is how good he was this summer. If he doesn’t hook on elsewhere, will be on the Jets short list if they have WR injuries.
Craig Watts (G/6-3/335/West Texas A&M/Colorado Springs, CO)
On the practice squad. It was a big surprise Dakota Dozier beat him out. Watts had the better summer. I think I know the reason why Dozier beat out Watts, for now. Dozier can play center. Watts is just a guard.
The Jets would rather activate a backup guard/center on game day, so the player can back-up at all three positions. But here is the kicker. If something happened to Nick Mangold that knocked him out for a few games, the Jets wouldn’t start Dozier at center, but Wesley Johnson. Dozier is only an option at center to finish a game.
Chandler Worthy (WR/5-9/173/Troy/Griffin, GA)
Had a really good summer, but was in the wrong camp for a young receiver trying to grab a spot with Anderson, Marshall and Peake on board.
Trevor Reilly (LB/6-5/245/Utah/Valley Center, CA)
He has a knee injury and was waived-injured.
Jeremy Ross (WR/6-0/215/California/San Diego, CA)
Got totally screwed. The is now way around it. He did everything he could as a receiver and returner to make the team, and the Jets could rue to the day they released him if Jalin Marshall fumbles a punt or two.
If the Jets didn’t paint themselves into a corner keeping four quarterbacks, they could have kept Ross.
I wonder who in the building had to tell Ross he was released. That person probably needed to take a shower after the meeting.
Khiry Robinson (RB/6-0/220/West Texas A&M/Midland, TX)
Broke his leg again and was waived-injured. I thought his work load in the fourth preseason game was a little excessive for a guy in their plans.
Ronald Martin (S/6-2/220/Louisiana State/Plaquemine, LA)
I have a sneaking suspicion he will be back. You know how teams move guys around the first week or so.
Dexter McDougle (CB/5-10/195/Maryland/Falmouth, VA)
Too many injuries.
Dominique Williams (RB/5-9/205/Wagner College/Bridgeton, NJ)
I haven’t seen the guy in a month. He suffered a bad concussion, and was out of sight, so I was surprised he made the roster, but was just keep the spot warm until the Jets landed somebody on waivers, and they did.
PLAYERS JETS CLAIMED
Braedon Bowman (TE/6-4/240/South Alabama/Mesa, AZ
I don’t think he’s going to be on the active roster long. I think they are kicking the tires, and could eventually release him or move him to the practice squad.
Brian Parker (TE/6-4/265/Albany/Henrietta, NY)
The #1 job of Jets tight ends is blocking, and this Rochester-native can certainly do that.
Troymaine Pope (RB/5-9/205/Jacksonville State/Anniston, AL)
Seattle didn’t want to lose him, but had to make a tough decision on the final cut-down. He led the Seahawks in preseason rushing with 162 yards on 24 carries. Claimed to replace Robinson.
Darryl Roberts (CB/6-0/182/Marshall/Lakeland, FL)
The fact that New England drafted him last year (seventh round) is a feather in his cap. It means he has his act together. They have very, very strict draft criteria for who they bring in there from a character/intelligence/work ethic standpoint. And he runs under 4.4. The Patriots were very deep at corner in this camp, and had some tough decisions to make on the final countdown. Perhaps the Jets took advantage of them releasing a guy they liked.
