Some thoughts and Whispers from Richmond . . .
I think today in Richmond, Sam Darnold had his best practice as a New York Jet.
I don’t do practice stats because I think that is reckless, but I will point out a few plays that caught my eye.
*Early in practice, with a blitz coming, he had made a quick decision throwing a quick square out to the right side to tight end Eric Tomlinson. I can’t tell you for sure if it was a hot-read, but looked like it might have been. He did a fine job making a quick decision, and getting rid of the ball fast and accurately.
*In the red zone, he had a beautiful throw for a touchdown to WR Robby Anderson on the right side of the end zone between two Redskins defensive backs.
*In the red zone, he had a perfect throw to WR Terrelle Pryor on the left goal line with CB Greg Stroman in tight coverage. He put it in a spot where the 6-4 Pryor could grab it over the 5-11 Stroman.
*He had a nice TD toss to TE Cliver Warford down the deep middle over linebacker Mason Foster . . .
FIU inside linebacker Anthony Wint continues to have a strong camp.
These practices take place on two fields. While most eyes were on Sam Darnold on one field, I noticed Wint had picked off quarterback Kevin Hogan in the end zone on the far field.
He’s very instinctive.
While he’s practicing very well, he doesn’t have much of a chance to make the 53-man roster, but he’s looking like a practice squad lock . . .
Ben Braden has turned into a very good right tackle. The former Michigan Wolverine, who was on the practice squad last year, gets a lot of push in the running game.
While the numbers are a little stacked against him, don’t rule him out for a roster spot. He has really improved . . .
Jamal Adams had a couple defensed passes in the red zone today. He looks prepared to have a much bigger impact in coverage than his rookie year.
Speaking of Adams, he had an interesting approach to handling his press conference today – he had Marcus Maye join him. This is pictured above.
Adams has already developed a distaste for dealing with the New York press, and that story last week about him questioning the work ethic of some teammates last year, getting blown out of proportion, didn’t help. I personally don’t think what he said was a big deal. He was talking about when he first got to the Jets, now now.
Also, Adams got worn out last year by a dogged reporter who wouldn’t leave him alone. He needed a little more protection from the organization to pull him away from this cat.
From what I hear, Adams doesn’t think he has much to gain by dealing with the local press . . .
Today in the end zone, you saw why the Jets signed CB Trumaine Johnson to a big money contract – he had a terrific defensed pass in the middle of the end zone on Redskins WR Josh Doctson.
