On Monday, the Jets announced their new uniforms, and the owner tweeted, “The wait is over. Introducing our new uniforms.”
I’m not going to write about the uniforms. It’s not something I particularly care about.
But a lot of people do, so I respect that, but I have nothing to add on that front. I don’t know much about fashion.
But it’s fair to say, when you hear a higher-up with the Jets say, “The wait is over,” many fans would love that to pertain to their playoff drought.
I am not being flippant or getting on Woody, just keeping it real.
When it comes to that 13-year playoff drought, tied with the Buffalo Sabres as the longest current streak in professional sports, it must end.
The wait needs to be over for that more than for the new uniforms.
It’s obvious why NFL teams, and the Jets are far from alone, introduce new uniforms and uniform combinations – it’s to sell merchandise to fans with the new logos, designs and color schemes.
But obviously new uniforms aren’t going to help you win on Sunday.
It’s about how the players in those uniforms play and how well they are coached.
And it’s fair to say that stufff needs to take the next step – players playing better and coaches coaching better.
That isn’t a shot at anybody, just the reality of a situation where the team has gone 4-13, 7-10 and 7-10 under the current head coach and his staff.
Hey, they know it. None of them were born yesterday.
You often hear that if the Jets don’t make the playoffs this year, the coach and GM will likely be fired.
I have no evidence of that. It’s pure conjecture.
This idea that Woody’s pissed, I have no idea if he’s pissed. He seems pretty chill on Twitter.
Who knows what will happen after this season, but it stands to reason that it’s about time the Jets make the playoffs.
And if Rodgers can stay healthy, they certainly can do that.
Obviously the “easiest” way to do that is by winning the division, which is entirely possible considering the current state of the division.
New England is rebuilding, and Miami and Buffalo had some huge departures this off-season.
If Rodgers can be the Green Bay Rodgers, coming of an Achilles injury, the Jets can certainly challenge for the division.
But that will not just take Rodgers playing at an elite level, but for the culture to take a big leap.
“If you want to be a winning organization and put yourself in a position to win championships and be competitive, everything that you do matters,” Rodgers said after last season. “The day after the Jets finished the 2023 season. “The bulls–t that has nothing to do with winning needs to get out of the building. That will be the focus moving forward.”
Some would argue uniform design and colors have nothing to do with winning.
This announcement this week of new uniforms is fine, but now it’s time to move on and focus on “making the main thing the main thing.”
And that is breaking the 13-year playoff drought.
