No matter how much some in the media want it, there should be no QB controversy with the Jets.
Just like when he came out of Florida, Tim Tebow is still a flawed passer, who needs a lot of work – a lot.
Maybe a couple more years of working on fundamentals will get him to a point he can be a starter, but right now, there should be no QB imbroglio with the Jets, no matter how hard the media pulls for one.
“Tebow wants to be the starter, no matter what kind of relationship he says he has with Sanchez. And deep down, it won’t be long before he believes he deserves it, too,” wrote Jeff Darlington on the league’s website. “But unless the Jets start realizing the true polarizing force of Tebow — something they failed to recognize by putting him front and center Monday afternoon — it won’t matter whether he deserves it or not. First, he’ll win the crowd. Then, he’ll win the job.”
No he won’t.
For all his issues with accuracy and field vision, Mark Sanchez is a better passer than Tebow.
And this is a passing league right now.
Tebow is always very careful not to stray from the company line, but he did say one thing today, that some reporters read into as a desire to start at quarterback.
“My goal is to go out there and try and execute and try to do as well as I possibly can,” Tebow said. “Improve every single day and really get comfortable with my role and expand my role my going out there and competing well.”
That “expand my role” comment caught a lot of people’s attention, including Kris Dyer of Metro New York, who wrote, “‘expand my role’ part is the obvious sticking point.”
From what I hear, the Jets are unhappy with reporters who pushed this angle, and feel are “manufacturing news” by assuming Tebow meant he wanted to start by saying “expand my role.”
He should not expand his role.
He should be the wildcat quarterback to compliment the better passer – Mark Sanchez.
That is it, and that is how the Jets view it right now.
The media needs to report the news not make it.
And they are really stirring this one up.
They want a quarterback controversy in the worst way.
It’s an easy story to write, or report on TV or radio – it doesn’t take much film study.
But I will agree with the people who say that having a press conference for a #2 quarterback was a mistake, and shouldn’t have occurred.
And Tebow made it clear, it his own classy way, he wanted no part of today’s proceedings.
“You can blame the guys upstairs,” Tebow said smiling, “They wanted me to do it. They made me do it.”
The Jets claimed they got a lot of media requests for Tebow, so they wanted to accommodate them. Who cares? As they used to say on those old anti-drug spots – “Just say no.”
And Tebow didn’t want to do it.
His instincts were right, and having the presser certainly fired up the QB controversy lobby.
But the Jets need to ignore them.
Sanchez needs to be the starting QB, and Tebow needs to be Brad Smith. End of story.
