This was a really interesting quote . . .
. . . from Jets offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains today about if the Jets will have to reduce the playbook with Luke Falk instead of Sam Darnold at quarterback. It’s actually the reserve.
“It won’t be, he won’t have a reduced package,” said Loggains. “There’s certain things being in the system from year one to year two that you’re going to see Sam Darnold take a huge jump in next year, and Luke had the advantage of sitting and watching a lot last year and going through another offseason of learning and he’s going to be a step ahead because he’s been in the system longer than a lot of people on the roster right now. He’s been in it, he knows it. He’s seen a full 16 game season with us, so he’s got a lot of flexibility at the line of scrimmage to change plays and to get us in and out of good plays and that’s one of Luke’s strengths and he needs to play to his strengths, and we need to allow him to do that.”
This is pretty darn interesting. The Jets will actually be able to expand their playbook this week instead of reducing it.
I have been writing this for a while, and have received some criticism, for saying Darnold is still getting comfortable in Gase’s playbook. It’s not great for a young quarterback to have one system as a rookie, and then to get another thick, complex playbook thrown at him in Year Two. Darnold is still thinking out there instead of reacting. When I write this stuff, I’m not hating on Darnold, just dealing with reality.
And what Loggains said today shed some more light on this. Of course Falk knows the system better than Darnold. He was in it all last season . . .
Trenton Cannon has not practiced this week and is iffy for this game.
“Obviously it would be a big blow to us but he’s crucial to what we do,” Brant Boyer said.
It’s a big blow to them in terms of kick and punt coverage, but not as a kick returner. He’s not an instinctive kick returner. Good third-down back and kick/punt cover guy, but not feeling him as a kick returner. They probably need to try somebody else back there . . .
The Patriots’ offensive line is a disaster. It’s possible that both starting offensive tackles along with the starting center will be out.
I’m sorry, I know it’s Tom Brady under center for New England, but if the Jets can’t take advantage of three starters being out on the Patriots’ line, they should be embarrassed.
True Brady gets rid of the ball fast, but if you are Gregg Williams and his charges, you have to take advantage of this. If it doesn’t matter who is in front of Brady because he’s so great, why did they pick Isaiah Wynn in the first round last year to play left tackle? He’s now out with a toe injury, and journeyman Marshall Newhouse is playing left tackle.
I’m sorry, three starting offensive lineman possibly being out is a problem, no matter who the QB is.
