I have to be honest . . .
I didn’t watch any behind-the-scenes documentaries about the Jets this off-season.
You know, the ones where they take you inside the war room during the draft, drive in cars with coaches going to work, and other exclusive access.
The Jets’ production team does a great job with this stuff. It’s very well done and they’ve won Sports Emmys.
And past years, I got a lot of good quotes from these shows, quoting a lot of the comments made in the war room, in private meetings and so forth.
But this year, for some reason, I just didn’t feel like watching them and didn’t.
I’m sure they were great.
I did some soul-searching and tried to figure out why I didn’t feel like watching this year.
And I figured it out.
To quote the old Elvis Presley song, “It’s time for a little less conversation more action.”
After missing the playoff 12 years in a row, and finishing in last place in the AFC East six of the last seven years, it’s time for action.
Look, I understand there are a lot of talented TV production people at One Jets Drive who produces some very good content, and they have a job to do.
I just reached a point this off-season, I just had no interest in watching these shows.
And I’m a football junky. I love this kind of all-access stuff. Actually let me rephrase that, I’m an NFL junky. I’m not a big college football fan, Too much read-option stuff – half the time I don’t even know who has the football – the QB or the RB. I’m not into that. I’m old school – hand the ball off or throw it. To me, this pistol offense stuff isn’t pure football. It’s magic tricks. It’s annoying to me.
The NFL has some of this stuff, but not nearly as much as college.
But the Jets need to win this year as far as I’m concerned.
I can’t speak for the team’s ownership. Don’t know if such an edict exists for the football side from ownership.
But as far as I’m concerned, after seven straight losing seasons, they need to at least have a winning record this year.
Now I always feel the goal every year should win the Super Bowl, but if that doesn’t happen, at least have a winning record.
And that is going to take a single-mindedness of purpose and tremendous focus by everyone on the football side.
That is why it’s a really bad idea for the Jets to do “Hard Knocks” this year.
Having HBO cameras in your meeting rooms isn’t what they need right now.
And if the NFL League office does force them to do the show against the will of their head coach, I’m probably not going to watch it.
As the American New Wave Band Berlin sang – “No more words.”
Nothing personal against any of the people who are involved in these creative enterprises.
But I’m all hyped out at this point.
As Al Davis liked to say, “Just win baby.”
