It’s time for another heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers – could the Washington Redskins be play for Braylon Edwards and more . . .
Considering the Jets messy cap situation, it is clearly going to be hard for them to re-sign both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards.
And it’s pretty apparent that Holmes, because of his world class speed and game-breaking ability, is the top priority.
The one scenario we could see Edwards coming back to the Jets, is if no other teams offers him big money, and he has to come back to the Jets for a moderate offer.
The one team that is rumored to be interested in Edwards, on the free agent market, are the Washington Redskins.
We reached out to a source close to the Redskins to get his take.
“I have heard they like him, but they also drafted three wide receivers, and early word is that they will try to re-sign Santana Moss,” said the source.
So how much might the Redskins offer Edwards?
“I figure that Moss would get maybe $5 million a year, so Edwards would get a little more than that,” said the source . . .
With the Jets disastrous cap situation, and there will be a cap in the new CBA, not only will they have to move on from some players they would love to keep, but they need to re-work some contracts.
And at the top of the list has to be Mark Sanchez whose cap figure for 2011 is a whopping$17,753,125.
There is no question he’s done a lot of good things over his first two years in the league, but do you think he’s a $17.8 million quarterback?
That’s a $1 million per touchdown, if you look at his stats from last year.
Sanchez is overpaid, just like so many other quarterbacks picked high in the first round, like Detroit’s Matthew Staffford ($41 million GUARANTEED) AND St. Louis’ Sam Bradford ($50 million GUARANTEED). That’s crazy.
The kind of loot Stafford, Bradford and Sanchez were given, before they proved themselves in the NFL, are a big reason why the NFL is going to have a rookie cap in the new CBA.
One issue the Jets will have to face in re-working Mark’s contract is the hype surrounding the players. He’s good, but considering all endorsements he has received, and notoriety, like “The Sanchise” nickname, he might be a little overrated (which was the contention of “Pro Football Weekly” on their website this week).
And the Jets went to the AFC Championship Game his first two years, so his supporters will throw that out anytime you debate this issue.
It’s highly unlikely they Jets will get any money back from Sanchez, but they definitely need him to re-work his contract. Right now it’s a big problem for him.
As is the hype. This is a quarterback who still a has a lot to prove.
“The 2011 season could be the one that defines Mark Sanchez,” wrote Dan Pompei of the Chicago Sun-Times.
And if Sanchez expects to have a standout season, he might be in his best interest to re-work his deal, so the Jets can bring back more key players.
Perhaps Sanchez should say, “I will re-due my deal, if you re-sign Braylon.”
Sanchez needs Edwards. The Jets quarterback has accuracy concerns, and the 6-3 Edwards has often helped him out with leaping grabs . . .
