Maybe it should not be out of the question . . .
Talking about a Jamal Adams trade.
He clearly thinks he’s a superstar who deserves a new deal with two years left on his current contract (which rarely happens with NFL first-round picks).
Perhaps the team contributed to his perception that he’s a superstar, promoting him like a superstar on their website and social media platforms ad infinitum. You’ve got to be careful with this stuff in terms of the organization promoting the heck out of young players. This is why Bill Parcells always said about hype regarding young players: “Don’t put him in Canton just yet, fellas.” Overhyping young players is bad for a football culture and the player’s psyche.
Now perhaps all that hype is coming home to roost.
Adams is in a place right now, aside from demanding a new contract, where he thinks he’s a player of the magnitude where it’s his place to judge future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees’ apology.
A couple of weeks ago, Brees caused a stir by saying: “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”
Brees apologized (more than once) because this upset many other players.
“It breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused,” Brees wrote. “In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country.”
Adams didn’t accept the apology from Brees or Buffalo Bills QB Jake Fromm who also offended people with something he texted.
“You and Drew aren’t really sorry,” tweeted Adams. “Save the bull(bleep) ass apologies. The truth just came out, and you two aren’t the only ones!”
Some might say: “Who is Adams to go public with not forgiving Brees, who isn’t even on his team?”
DeMario Davis praised the apology, but Adams, 24, trashed Brees, 41, who has done so much work in the New Orleans community to help the downtrodden, including a recent $5 million donation for pandemic relief?
So when you combine the contract mess, with the mindset of the player right now, you wonder if a trade might be the way to go.
If you don’t think this situation is a mess, you’re kidding yourself.
“Without a contract extension, Jamal Adams wants to be traded,” wrote Yahoo’s Charles Robinson, who has a tremendous source with the Jets. “They prefer to keep him and extend him in 2021. If teams are interested in Adams, they can call. But Jets are not going to shop him. His agent doesn’t have the green light to set up a deal, either. Teams must call.”
“The plan would be for Jamal to be here long-term, again, I’ve also made it known, I have to do what’s in the best interest of this team if other teams call to talk about players, I will listen,” Joe Douglas said in April.
I know I mentioned yesterday I was was going to get into a team that makes a ton of sense today.
I don’t like to tease, so I will throw out the team, and then expound on it tomorrow.
The Seattle Seahawks.
