Cortland – A lot going on today in Cortland – fights, red zone action, let’s dive into the festivities. . .
Mark Sanchez needs to make decisions a little quicker in the red zone.
He threw a pass to the right corner of the end zone to Patrick Turner, and it was broken up by Eric Smith.
The play before this, Sanchez threw a pass over the short middle, around the goal line to Shonn Greene, and the pass was broken up by Bart Scott.
Both of these passes were delivered too late . . .
On a touchdown run by Shonn Greene up the middle, Matt Slauson did a nice job locking up Kenrick Ellis.
If I was running the Jets, I would view Ellis as a player on the bubble right now. I’m dead serious. He struggles getting off blocks, lacks ideal quickness and plays too upright.
He’s also on the ground too much, a no-no for defensive line play . . .
I don’t know who dropped more F-Bombs today, Rex or Cro.
Cro was going nuts over something in a red zone drill (and dropping F-bombs galore, but there was no physical fight – just a verbal outburst).
Supposedly he was mad at something Dustin Keller did.
And then Sanjay Lal accused Cro of interfering with Stephen Hill, and that might have inflamed Cro even more. Lal really went after one of the Jets practice refs over this one.
Rex called the team up after this and talked about the importance of being good teammates.
And then tussle between DeMario Davis and Terrence Ganaway ensued, and Rex made the team run gut drills (forever). This Davis-Danaway “fight” wasn’t that big of a deal, but it came at the wrong time, so close to the Cro explosion, so Rex punished the entire team . . .
The Jets definitely missed Nick Mangold during his trip to London. You all know about the bad snaps in the scrimmage. Today, the Jets gave up two sacks right up the middle on blitzes, by Demario Davis and Aaron Maybin.
Mangold will be back at practice on Wednesday . . .
I have to admit, I feel terrible for Robert Griffin, but I don’t think he makes it past the cut to 75. Guys are just blowing by him with regularity. He’s had a very, very rough camp . . .
To me, Jordan White looks like a second-round receiver, not a seventh rounder.
In the seven-on-seven drill, he caught a touchdown. He also had a nice catch on an out-route.
He runs great routes and has really soft hands.
I think the Jets have two major seventh round steals on their hands with White and Antonio Allen.
Allen had another run stop around the line, and had a PD in the corner of the end zone on a pass to Keller . . .
The Jets have moved Donnie Fletcher to safety. The rookie free agent was a corner at Boston College, but probably lacks the ideal wheels for that position in the NFL. But he has nice height (6-1) and ball skills for the safety spot. He just needs to put on a little weight. He’s listed at 195 . . .
Bilal Powell had the nicest run of the day, a scamper off left tackle for a big gain.
Rex loves his “jump steps.”
He has very quick feet . . .
I think the practice fights have been blown way out of proportion. This happens in every camp.
“Camp is camp – people are just competing out there – their fire is up,” said Stephen Hill.
Anybody who thinks Rex lacks control of the team because of a few practice fights is clueless.
New England has had a lot of practice fights this summer. Does that mean Bill Belichick lacks control?
