Florham Park – It’s time for a heaping helping of Website Whispers from the Jets training complex in Florham Park, NJ. Let’s get it started . . .
Ellis Lankster is squarely on the bubble.
Now I do think if he’s cut, he will likely get a job. Corners are hard to find.
Dennis Thurman was yelling at him today for lining up wrong on a play.
Lankster is super-tough, but needs to be more consistent . . .
Mark Sanchez threw a nice deep out to Zach Rogers on the right side.
But in practice, usually a positive plays by one side of the ball, means a negative play on the other side of the ball.
Kyle Wilson was beat on this play.
In my opinion, after watching every practice all summer, Rex Ryan needs to have the gumption to move Darrin Walls and Isaiah Trufant up the depth chart to more prominent roles in the secondary.
Walls and Trufant have earned more PT . . .
Ben Obomanu beat Dee Milliner deep down the right sideline.
I know Milliner has been taking some heat for his performance against Jacksonville.
I’m not here to make excuses for anyone, but I don’t think he’s 100 percent healthy.
I think he has some kind of leg issue.
Today, when I saw him running, he didn’t seem right.
I saw the same issue in Cortland . . .
Joe McKnight continues to battle with the media.
He refused to talk today.
I don’t blame him.
There are writers (not all, just a couple) who are taunting him on twitter – going over the line . . .
Geno Smith isn’t close to 100 percent, no matter what he said after the game against Jacksonville.
When he’s in the pocket, you don’t see it, but anytime he runs, you see him hobbling.
He had his ankle wrapped, and underneath the wrap, there was some kind of special red tape.
Hey, this quarterback situation is pretty simple to figure out.
Not only is Geno not ready to start, he’s not healthy – that is a bad combo.
The Jets should start Mark Sanchez (or Greg McElroy), and let Smith get healthy, and get more prepared to be an NFL QB.
Let Sanchez or McElroy be a “hold-the-fort” guy as Bill Parcells used to say, until Geno is ready.
Or maybe one of them will turn out to be better than that.
But this concept of starting Smith, who is holding the ball too long (not making fast enough decisions), and is playing on a bad wheel, is foolish . . .
Greg McElroy continues to wear a medical sleeve on his left leg when he’s playing or just walking around . . .
Robert Malone was back practicing today after missing some time with a bad back.
He had a good day punting.
Malone was the better punter today in his competition with Ryan Quigley . . .
The perception about the Giant is always they have a mighty defense.
But hear their linebacker corps is underwhelming to say the least . . .
John Idzik and Rex Ryan stood together for a while watching Marty Morhinweg work extensively with the quarterbacks . . .
Stephen Hill needs to start making more catches on fly routes. He needs to make more contested catches when he’s going up with the DB for the ball. At 6-4, with great leaping ability, he need to win more of these battles. That is why the Jets picked him – the “go” route . . .
