Florham Park – It’s time for some Website Whispers from Jets camp in Florham Park, New Jersey. A lot going on as the Jets prepare for their opener against Buffalo . . .
The Jets will workout outside linebacker D.J. Bryant on Tuesday. He was just released by the Houston Texans. The James Madison-product looked good this summer, but was expendable due to the Texans’ glut at OLB . . .
I don’t totally agree with this quote from Bills linebacker Nick Barnett about the Jets’ Wildcat.
“Anything they’re doing is not new,” Barnett said. “It’s the NFL, and everything’s been done before, and it’ll be done again.”
Think about this for a second. Do you think Tony Sparano has spent the last five months working on the Wildcat, to use all the same formations that everyone has seen before? That is just wishful thinking from Barnett.
The Jets have been working on myriad wrinkles the last several months . . .
Josh Bush (concussion) was in a red jersey at today’s practice, but told JC today he will be ready for Sunday.
“I will be fine,” Bush said.
The Jets really need him since Eric Smith is iffy for the game with knee and hip issues . . .
Dennis Landolt, who hurt his knee early in camp, is still with the team.
Perhaps he will be the designated six-week IR player.
If the Jets still have issues at right tackle in six weeks, he could be an option. He was a very good right tackle at Penn State . . .
It’s pretty amazing that Royce Pollard (practice squad) was out there practicing today. He separated his shoulder against Philly on Thursday. One report claimed he tore his labrum. And he’s practicing four days later?
The kid is really tough, and I think he’s sucking it up to the nth degree to not mess up this opportunity . . .
TE Konrad Reuland is your typical Stanford-product – extremely bright. Interviewing him today, he came across as a guy who will pick up the playbook in a couple of weeks.
The 49ers told him they were interested in bringing him back after waiving him, but the blunt Reuland says, “I wasn’t holding my breath.”
I have to admit, even though he’s listed a 6-4, 260, he doesn’t look that big. He carries it very well.
Early in practice, in a special team’s drill, he pancaked Marcus Dowtin . . .
I asked Rex Ryan today in the presser if the move to release Marcus Dixon, and replace him with Isaako Aaitui, was a cost-cutting move. The Jets saved $150,000 with the move.
You know what, he didn’t dismiss that theory out of hand, like I expected.
He said to “ask Ari (Nissim) or Mike (Tannenbaum).” They handle contracts along with Jackie Davidson.
But quite honestly, if this was a cost-cutting measure, the blame does not go to Ari or Mike.
To you really think they are going around cutting salaries on their own. What GM, and his assistant, in any sport, would do that, unless the edict was coming from over them?
So if this is what is going on here, this is on Woody Johnson and Ira Axelrad, not Ari and Mike . . .
By the way, there were some reports that Aaitui is a nose tackle. Not in a 3-4. He is built like your quintessential 3-4 end – like Mo Wilkerson – 6-4, 315 with very little fat. I don’t know if the guy can play, but he definitely looks the part . . .
Mike DeVito (above) seems good to go for Sunday. He has been dealing with a calf injury.
