Here is another heaping helping of Dan’s Website Whispers, including a Revis’ contract proposal. Jump on board for just $7.95 a month . . .
10-year deal for Revis? (more later) . . . teams are going to have their eyes on the Jets cuts. There are some good players who are going to be released at the end of August. The Jets have a lot of talent . . .
The Jets releases today shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Mick Williams was a terrific player at Pitt, but he wasn’t a good fit for the Jets defense. He’s a 6-0, 280-pound nose tackle, not a good fit for the 3-4. If he’s going to have any chance to make it in the NFL, it will be as a three-technique in a 4-3.
Safety Brannon Condren was in trouble the second the Jets signed Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren and made him a safety. Is Condren a better safety right now than Warren? Of course he isn’t. But the Jets feel Warren has more of an upside. Also, with Dwight Lowery slated to play a combo cornerback/safety role this year, Condren had no chance.
Punter/kickoff artist Jared Ballman didn’t do much to help himself since joining the team. He is more of a punter than a placekicker, and the Jets already have two punters. And as a field goal kicker, he’s very average. The Jets need more of a bona fide placekicker as another camp leg in case Nick Folk struggles.
But then again, if Folk struggles, the Jets next kicker is probably in Houston right now, where Neil Rackers and Kris Brown are battling for one job . . .
New York Post writer Bart Hubbuch wrote a column on Sunday with a headline – “Face facts, LaDainian is pretty much LaDone.”
The writer went on to make the case that the legendary tailback has nothing left.
One of the points he made was that Tomlinson looked bad in spring practices.
I will say this. Hubbuch might be right in the long run, but Tomlinson carried the ball so little in the spring, I, personally, couldn’t discern what the player is going to bring to the table. The Jets really took it easy on LT in the OTA’s and minicamp. Clearly, they didn’t want him to have leave anything on the spring practice fields.
Maybe Hubbuch is on to something, but I will give LT a little more time in Cortland, in the preseason and early in the season, before I write him off. I just don’t think there is enough evidence on the table yet . . .
The field at the New Meadowlands isn’t very good right now . . .
One Jets source tells me the price cuts on the remaining PSL’s have really generated a lot of sales . . .
According to a source close to a Jets player, the buzz in the locker room is that the Jets offered Darrelle Revis a 10-year deal for $150 million with $50 million guaranteed. How this is rumored deal is structured, I’m not exactly sure . . .
I know it’s going to be hard for WR Larry Taylor to make the team, but he might be worthy of a practice squad slot. The guy has tremendous speed, quickness and very good hands. Taylor looks like he could be a very good kick returner on the NFL level. At 5-6, with world class speed, he’s very hard to track in the open field . . .
The winds in the new stadium are going to be very tricky for placekickers. They swirl differently than the old stadium. The new stadium might be windier than the old facility because it’s not totally enclosed like the old stadium. There are more openings for the tricky winds of the swamp to make their way into the stadium . . .
