Concord – Jets need to figure out what they want out of this season before it slips away. It’s not too late. It’s time for a high level meeting . . .
The Jets should be 0-2.
As we all know they were given a gift in Week One from linebacker Lavonte David.
What do they want out of this season?
I’m serious.
Do they want to write off this year developing a raw rookie quarterback, let him take his lumps, learn on the job?
Or do they want to hang round, compete, stay relevant.
Geno Smith finished the Jets-Pats game with a 27.6 quarterback rating and threw three four quarter picks.
He continues to be plagued by the same problem – he holds the ball too long and is having a very hard time processing what he’s seeing from defenses.
His most successful plays are when he has plenty of time, and somebody flashes open cutting across the field, where it’s pretty obvious where the ball should go.
He’s not throwing many timing routes (a big part of the West Coast Offense) – he’s waiting for guys to flash open, and then delivers the ball. And even then, it’s often late.
He doesn’t trust his eyes right now. On the pick in the fourth quarter on pass intended for Santonio Holmes in the red zone, the wideout was open, but Smith didn’t initially trust his eyes and pull the trigger at the appropriate time, delivered the ball late, and it was picked off.
I’ve said it a thousand times. He’s not “instant coffee.” He needs a redshirt year.
And I’m telling you, if Rex Ryan and Marty Mornhinweg push this envelope too far, they risk losing some of the team.
Defenses players busting their butts, offensive lineman doing the same, and you have a kid back there who doesn’t know what he’s doing. These guys are going to start getting pissed. This isn’t a test lab, it’s the NFL.
“You turn the ball over four times, you will have a hard time beating anybody, especially on the road.” – Nick Mangold said after the Jets-Pats game.
The Jets are 1-1, and have a very winnable game coming up against Buffalo, with 10 days to prepare.
Since Mark Sanchez isn’t available now due to his shoulder issue, it’s time to hand the keys to Brady Quinn.
I’m not putting Quinn in Canton, but he’s a seven-year vet who knows the why’s and wherefore’s of playing NFL quarterback. He’s a mature leader who can manage a game for you.
It’s time to put Geno on ice for a while.
Unless the Jets aren’t concerned with winning, and developing Smith is the #1 priority this year. Then just leave him out there.
But that would be unfair to the other 52 guys on that roster, and to Jets fans, especially PSL holders.
And Rex Ryan might be fighting for his job.
He can’t afford for this season to slip away in a quarterback-driven league being led by a quarterback who doesn’t know how to drive yet.
And we saw something from Rex last night that we hadn’t seen a lot of over the years – he pulled Dee Milliner and replaced him with Darrin Walls in the middle of the game.
Rex in the past might have just stuck with Milliner – you know – loyalty to the point of defiance.
But the kid isn’t ready, and it was time for a change
The same thing applies to Geno Smith.
It’s time to try Brady Quinn.
Or, at the very least, have Smith on a short leash against Buffalo, and be willing to make an in-game change.
